The Bourgogne (Burgundy) region of France has become more popular as a rock climbing destination in recent years following the publication of a glossy guidebook to the various climbing crags in the region. Written by David and Carrie Atchison-Jones and entitled “Bourgogne onsight – a vue”, the guide is part of the Jingo Wobbly series. The ISBN is (13) 978-1-873665-31-2, and further details can be obtained from www.jingowobbly.com.

Martin and Karen with their eight-year-old daughter Lydia, spent part of their week's stay at la Petite Maison climbing rock sites in Burgundy.  All the photographs shown were taken on the Culles-les-Roches.

The region’s crags range from serious multi-pitch venues to pleasant and easily accessible small crags suitable for beginners and families. The climbing is mostly on limestone and is generally well-equipped with bolt protection and lower-offs, although a small trad rack would be a sensible precaution at some of the crags.

As one would expect, French grades are used throughout, although the guidebook gives a useful comparison chart of international climbing grades. Route details are given in many languages to assist climbers from around the world.

With plenty of things to do and places to visit apart from the climbing, not to mention its world-renowned wines, the Burgundy region offers a great deal to the visiting climber, whether on an intensive climbing holiday or on a family holiday with the occasional climbing trip included.
